Members Alex Mehran and Nick Halmos Dominate Bermuda 1-2

Alex Mehran, left, and Nick Halmos – both NYYC members and former members of the Brown University Sailing Team -- won both legs of the 17th Biennial Bermuda 1-2 Race, hosted by the Newport Yacht Club on their Owen Clarke Class 40, Cutlass. In his single-handed debut in June, Mehran won the first leg of the Bermuda 1-2, from Newport, RI to St. George’s, Bermuda. Not only did he win the 650-mile race, but the nearest competitor in the following fleet was 100 miles behind. For that, Mehran was named US Sailing’s Sailor of the Week: June 17-23. Then he and Nick Halmos won the double-handed race from Bermuda to Newport in July in the same convincing fashion. In the last 24 hours the lead boats suffered sustained head winds of 30-35 knots with gusts of up to 50 knots and three-meter seas. Cutlass won both legs overall and on corrected time. View More

New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup

New York, N.Y./Newport, R.I., USA (June 30, 2009) – When teams from the world’s leading yacht clubs descend upon Newport, R.I. for the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup regatta, September 15-19, sponsored by Rolex and Sperry Top-Sider, many of the competitors will be familiar with the waters surrounding this legendary port. After all, legions of sailors have made Newport a “must sail” destination, hoping to race where the NYYC hosted the America’s Cup from 1930-1983. Of the now 19 teams representing 14 countries – just joining the competition is the Yacht Club Italiano of Genoa, Italy – it is safe to say that many have been to Newport and enjoyed the cosmopolitan City by the Sea.
