NEWFOUNDLAND CRUISE-IN-COMPANY
July 31 - August 10, 2008
The South Coast of Newfoundland is one of the more awesome places in the world. High peaks, fiords, waterfalls, navigable streams, sandy beaches, small villages, some populated some deserted and lots to see and do.
We are proposing an 11 day cruise through some of the more beautiful parts of this great island. The passages are all short but the fiords are long, beautiful and interesting.
We have chosen the first part of August to try to avoid the fog and the stronger winds. Historically this is the best cruising time during the short summer in this area. It also give those with spare time the opportunity to cruise the Bras Dor Lakes before or after the cruise and for those who wish to spend more time in August, there is extensive additional cruising opportunities in and around Fortune Bay & Bay d’Espoire.
Listed below is a suggested itinerary. All passages in open water are short, however many of the fiords and rivers are 8 to 16 miles long. Crew changes can be made at Sydney, Cape Breton Island before sailing across to Newfoundland, Burgeo, François and St. Pierre.
PROPOSED ITINERARY
Day 1 - Thursday, July 31st
Assemble in Burgeo for a cocktail party and cruise briefing (http://www.burgeonl.com/). This is a very interesting town with lots of history. I recommend you read “A Whale for the Killing” and “The Boat Who Wouldn’t Float”. Ramea is an island 12 miles south east of Burgeo that is well worth a visit for those who have time on the way there. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/9534
Days 2 & 3 - Friday, August 1st and Saturday, August 2nd
Explore around Burgeo, visit the pond where Farley Mowat lived and wrote “A Whale for the Killing”, sail to Grey River via White Bear Bay and Bay de Vieux. Both of these bays have waterfalls and streams with trout and possibly salmon. Caribou hunting is forbidden unless you are over 80 and then only with a bow and arrow. Saturday night will be up to you where you anchor. We will regroup at Grey River probably at Northwest Arm weather permitting.
