The Resolute Cup

The New York Yacht Club recently dedicated the Resolute Cup to be awarded to the winner of the U.S. Qualifying Series. In the words of Commodor Thomas Harrington, "The significance of this event, both for the NYYC and the community of yacht clubs in the United States, warrants the dedication of a trophy of this stature so that we can solidify its place on the calendar as a regular biannual event for U.S. yacht clubs to compete." The Resolute Cup is one of two trophies originally awarded to Resolute for winning the Long Island Series in 1915 and beating Vanitie. With the rededication, the Cup will now be known as the Resolute Cup for the New York Yacht Club U.S. Qualifying Series In 1915, Resolute was also awarded a trophy for her performance during the New York Yacht Club Cruise. The two trophies are linked by the sailing prowess of Resolute, and they remain linked today; the second trophy has been rededicated as the Resolute Trophy for the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, to be awarded at the discretion of the Flag Officers and Organizing Authority. It is a testament to the heritage of the NYYC that these trophies remain related through their rededication to two events that are integral to one another: the U.S. Qualifying Series and the Invitational Cup.
