Chicago Yacht Club

Chicago, Ill.

Founed 1875

Chicago Yacht Club puts a high priority on teaching sailing and yachting to children and adults. Our junior sailing school has an annual enrollment of about 250 kids, and our junior teams are active on the regatta circuit and can be seen at national events like the Orange Bowl. The club hosts the largest annual sailing events in the mid-west, including the Sailing World NOOD Regatta and the Verve Cup Regatta. Our signature event is the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. At 333 miles the "Mack" race is the longest annual freshwater race in the world. In 2014, our 106th running, we had 340 yachts participate.

Skipper Mark Teborek was named a Collegiate All-American during his years on the Boston College Sailing Team from 1999 to 2003. He was a member for the U.S. Sailing Team prior to the 2004 Olympic Games. Tactician Sarah Renz was an All-American college sailor in 1998 for the College of Charleston. She won the Richardson Cup Trophy and raced in the Lightning Women's North American Championship, as a skipper for both. Crew member Daniel Gabriel competed this year in the Etchells Jaquar Cup as the tactician. His current classes are Etchells, Beneteau 36.7s, and Lasers. Crew member Michael Whitford began sailing Optis in CYC junior program at age four. While at Washington College, Whitford led the Shoremen Sailing Team as A-Division skipper.
