Bay Head Yacht Club

Bay Head, New Jersey

The Bay Head Yacht Club was organized and founded in 1888 "to promote yachting and rowing and to foster athletic sports upon the water and to promote the general prosperity of Bay Head". Since its founding, Bay Head has always been a strong, family-oriented sailing club. That strength continues today as the club starts its 124th season under sail. BHYC was a leader in the 1920s as E Scows came east, and skippers like Slade Dale and Sam Merrick brought the club to national prominence. Merrick was head of the 1984 Olympic Sailing Team, which made U.S. history by medaling in every class. BHYC is also proud to be a founding club of the U.S. Sailing Hall of Fame.

Skipper, Russ Lucas, an avid racer onshore and offshore, has recently found success with wins at Charleston Race Week in the Melges 20 and Eastern Scow Championships.  Lucas says, “Our team is anxious to compete against teams representing our nation’s finest clubs”. Lucas will be supported by Michael Fortenbaugh, a former Scow champion many times over, and also the Founder and Commodore of the Manhattan Yacht Club.  Peter Wright, another Scow fanatic and champion will be crewing along with Sam Williams. Williams recently graduated from Dartmouth after an esteemed college career, which, along with his Optimist and 420 records, makes him a strong member of the Bay Head Yacht Club team.
