Carolina Yacht Club

The Carolina Yacht Club is located on “The Battery” in historic downtown Charleston. With direct access to Charleston Harbor, the Club claims to have the best sailing facility on the East Coast between Annapolis and Miami.   In addition to hosting national, local and regional regattas, the Club sponsors a highly successful junior program which has an annual participation of 150 sailors.  CYC has strong fleets of E-Scows, Lightning’s, Melges and Lasers.  Its members have participated in the America’s Cup and the Olympics, and have won numerous national championships.  

Skipper Will Hanckel is an accomplished dinghy and keel boat helmsman having steered his J/120 to first- in-class finishes at Key West, Miami and Charleston Race Weeks, and a first overall in the Charleston to Bermuda Race.  A Y-Flyer national champion, Hanckel also has an impressive record in the E-Scow and J-24. Tactician Walter Prause is a former sailing coach at St. Mary’s College.  He has extensive offshore experience, and captained Ted Turner’s 1993 Challenge America campaign. Crew Miles Martschink has an extensive dinghy resume including years in Lightnings,   Melges 24s and E-Scows. Hanckel, Prause, and Martschink have won the Carolina Yacht Club Championship for the past three years and represented the club at the 2010 US Qualifying Series.
