Storm Trysail Club

National Club

The Storm Trysail Club, reflecting in its name the sail raised when facing adverse conditions, is one of the world’s most respected sailing clubs, with its membership comprised strictly of skilled blue water and ocean racing sailors. In addition to holding various prestigious offshore racing events, STC hosts the biennial Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex and works year-round to expand the sport of ocean racing. It was one of the early leaders in establishing and promoting the use of the IRC rating system in North America, and with the Transpacific Yacht Club, it developed the Storm Trysail Transpac 65.  With an added mission to encourage young sailors to become big-boat racers, the Storm Trysail Foundation hosts the annual Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta in addition to several Junior Safety-at-Sea Seminars.

Skipper Jim Crane is a two time Lightning North American champion, three time Lightning mid-winter champion, North American Sonar champion, World One Ton champion crew and has a long track record in off-shore sailing. Joined by wife Brenda, an accomplished sailor who has won the Rolex Women’s Championship as a crew, the Lightning World Championship as a crew, and the North American Windsurfing Championship in the Mistral class, Jim will have a good level of support. Tactician Bill Jason brings vast experience from sailing Farr 40s, Sonars, Lightnings, Lasers, J/105s, Etchells, J/35s and many others.  Often one of their competitors, but in this case a fellow crew member, Grant Tankoos rounds out the team with his Sonar experience.
