Invitational Cup Team

Skipper:
Peter McChesney
ISAF Classification: USA PM58

Peter McChesney's passion for sailing might be genetically driven as his great great grandfather was a English tall ship captain. The youth Laser sailor attended St. Mary's College where he was a member of the budding and now powerhouse college sailing team earning Intercollegiate All American status.

While working for North Sails in his 20's McChesney enjoyed competing up and down the east coast on winning big boat programs as helmsman or tactician.  For recreation the J-22 was the boat of choice where he won the J-22 North Americans in 2003.  Pete also competes at a very high level in the Star with top finishes at the Star Western Hemispheres (tied for 1st), winning the competitive Mid Atlantic District Champs,  4th at the North Americans with fellow NYYC Invitational Crew Shane Zwingelberg and 9th at the very competitive Star Bacardi Cup.

As of late Pete enjoys sailing his J-105 with his wife Margret on the bow and surrounded by friends, the Corinthian aspect of the class draws him to this type of boat.

That Corinthian aspect drew Pete to the Invitational Cup where Pete was the Skipper on the Annapolis Yacht Club team  at the qualifiers for the Invitational Cup in 2010 that finished 2nd.

Pete has a wife and 3 kids who also enjoy the water and sail with him on the 105 and J-22.

Tactician:
John Torgerson

John honed his skills as a 8 yr old sailing Optimists, competing on the International circuit sailing numerous world and European championships. John also won the singlehanded Nationals in High School qualifying him for the US Olympic festival where he won a Bronze medal sailing Lasers.

While at Old Dominion John led his team to a National Championship in 1998 as well as the Team Race National championship, this helped ODU win the coveted Fowle trophy for the best College sailing program in the Country. This is a testament to Johns leadership as during that season he also won the Singlehanded Nationals. John was a 3 time all American at ODU and was a College Sailor of the year finalist.

After college John moved out to San Francisco to pursue an Olympic Campaign in lasers, making the US Sailing team from 1997-2000. He was the # 1 ranked sailor going into the 2000 team trials, placing 4th after a tough event. Post Olympic trials John worked in San Francisco as an Investment Banker, while working hard during the week John managed to sail quite a few bigger boats in the San Francisco Bay, serving as tactician for Russ Silvestri and Chris Perkins on various boats.

Moving back to his home waters in Annapolis John has been busy sailing an Etchells and working on advancing his career in Sales. John sailed as tactician in this years Swan 42 nationals with skipper Peter McChesney.
