CLUB HISTORY Bayview

In 1915, five Detroit men each put $14 on a table to start Bayview Yacht Club. Although those founding members weren’t sailors, Bayview soon became a sailing club. In 1925, the club organized its first Bayview Mackinac Race, a long-distance, freshwater race up Lake Huron to historic Mackinac Island. The race has been sailed every year since 1925 and has become Bayview’s signature event.

Bayview’s clubhouse sits on the bank of the Detroit River, about a mile from Lake St. Clair, often thought of as the “sixth Great Lake”. The club has hosted scores of important regattas – some sailed in the lake, others in the river in front of the clubhouse. These have included adult and youth championships, one-design class events, match racing (including Bayview’s Grade 2 Detroit Cup) and team racing. In 2011 Bayview hosted the Inaugural Bayview One Design Regatta which was awarded US Sailings One Design Regatta of the Year.

With nearly a century of sailing in her past, Bayview is widely regarded as a premier yacht racing club in middle America and beyond. Its members have sailed in most of the world’s prestigious races. Two Bayview members served as President of the United States Sailing Association and one currently sits as Vice President.

Sailing. It’s what we do at Bayview. It’s who we are.

ABOUT THE TEAM

Team Selection Process
Commodore Kuspa along with members of the Board and the Sailing Council developed a list of potential skippers based on experience and sailing resume. Through a series of meetings this group was further refined to a short list of 3 potential skippers/teams. Each skipper was then interviewed to determine the final selection.

Team Training Plan
The team of Marc Hollerbach, Nathan Hollerbach and Nick Marcolini began training in a Melges 20 in mid-June working on boat handling, sail trim and weight placement. Their first opportunity to train in Sonars came when they participated in a grade 3 match race in Chicago. The team will continue to train in the Melges 20 locally throughout August and will host a series of starting clinics in the club’s 10 Ultimate 20’s to hone their starting skills.
