CLUB HISTORY

Coral Reef

Founded in 1955, Coral Reef Yacht Club is proud to be returning for the second consecutive Challenge. Our regatta tradition began with SORC racing and Columbus Day Regattas back in the 1950’s. In1962 the Bacardi Cup moved from Cuba and the Star Class found a permanent winter home. Coral Reef hosts the annual Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta which is known the world over. CRYC’s race committee runs circles for the ISAF’s World Cup - Miami, Bacardi - Miami Sailing Week and has hosted the Lightning Worlds and two Star Class World Championships. CRYC’s youth sailing program has two Optimist national champs and a US Jr. Women’s single handed champion. Seventeen Coral Reefers were College All-American Sailors including three College Sailors of the Year. CRYC has two Rolex Yachtsmen of the Year and one Gold Medal Olympian, as well as several world champions in the Star, Etchells and Snipe Classes. In 2016, former Rolex Yachtsman of the Year and former Snipe world champion Augie Diaz captured his first gold star by winning the Star Class World Championship hosted at his own Club.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The team selection process in ever involving. After a modest results in 2014, it was felt that the team should get younger. The 2016 team will be led by Nathaniel Johansson and Enrique Quintero both distinguished young sailors. Nathaniel is a starting skipper for the Dartmouth College Sailing Team and Enrique is a former sailing coach and Snipe World Champ. The remainder of the team is still in the selection process.

Plans for team training includes traveling to Toronto for 2 days of one on one coaching (Melges 20) with Canadian silver medalist Mike Wolfs and a two day M20 regatta at Port Credit Yacht Club. The team will than continue training in Miami in Sonars through the main event in September.
