CLUB HISTORY Shelter Island

Founded in 1886, at the entrance to Dering Harbor, the Shelter Island Yacht Club was a favorite stopping-off point for grand steam and sailing yachts from New York City. The founding members were business men from Manhattan and Brooklyn armed with a vision to further recreational sailing, racing, and social fellowship on the local waters. Organized in the 1920s, the junior sailing program has been a hallmark of the club with over 100 new children learning to sail and race each summer. The history of the club is also reflected in a memorable succession of one-design fleets: Nationals, Wee Scots, Stars, Wood Pussys, Comets, Lightnings, Blue Jays, Penguins, Lasers, Etchells, Herreshoff 12 1/2s, Stuart Knockabout, 420s, and Optimists.

The helmsperson for the event will be Jay Mills. Jay drove the club's entry in the qualifying series at the last event and our team finished 5th overall. In addition to that regatta, Jay was an All-American at Hobart College and has spent the last several years campaigning an Etchells. Most recently, Jay won the 2016 Etchells Long Island Sound Championships where he prevailed over a very tough fleet of 26 boats (including several former world champions).

The club has a strong Etchells fleet and has hosted numerous regional events including the Long Island Sound Championships and Atlantic Coast Championships over the years. The club also has a very strong H12.5 fleet and hosted the National Championships in 2012 and will play host again in 2017. Additionally, the club's junior program has hosted the JSA of Long Island Sound Champs for both Optis and 420/Lasers. More recently, the club has established a big boat program and members have participated in numerous NYYC race week events and the Transatlantic Race where the club’s entry (Prospector) finished 3rd in their class
