Southern Yacht Club

New Orleans, La.

Founded 1849

Southern Yacht Club traces its history back to the club's founding in the Gulf Coast resort townof Pass Christian, Miss. in the year 1849. Only the venerable New York Yacht Club can document an earlier founding date. As such, SYC is proud to bear the mantle of the second oldest yacht club in the United States. Over the years, Southern Yacht Club sailors have won four Olympic medals and numerous national and international championships. Through more than 160 years of prosperity and adversity, the Southern Yacht Club has maintained a tradition of keen competition, sportsmanship and eponymous hospitality.

This will be Southern Yacht Clubs fourth time at the Resolute Cup, previously branded as the U.S. Qualifying Series. Maybe it is the uniqueness of the event that keeps them coming back? Two different fleets of boats, Melges 20s and Sonars, will be used for the competition. All equipment, including the sails, is provided and the rig tuning will be standardized across both fleets. Each competitor must be a World Sailing Group 1 (amateur) sailor, and a full member of the club he or she represents. The event provides one of the most level playing fields in the sport of sailing and rewards teams that come in prepared but can also learn and adjust on the fly. That will have to be the goal for skipper Marcus Eagan and his crew. Eagan brings over 28 years of racing experience along with first or second place finishes at events such as, the 2014 Etchells Worlds, the 2013 J/22 Worlds, and the 2013 Melges 20 Worlds. That experience at the Melges 20 Worlds will help Eagan greatly in the Resolute Cup when it comes to half of the one-design fleet that he will have to sail.
