The Cleveland Yachting Club

CYC 7 22 08 9908 copy 3

Rocky River, OH

Founded 1878

The Cleveland Yachting Club was founded in 1878 by a small group of influential and visionary businessmen who were drawn together by a common bond, the love of boats and water. Located on the south shore of Lake Erie, CYC is one of the oldest and most respected yachting clubs in the nation. It is widely known for the beauty of its natural resources and family-friendly atmosphere.

This year Cleveland Yachting Club will be one of the nine first-time competitors participating in the Resolute Cup. For some of these smaller clubs their aim is just to compete in this one event, but that mentality is not one shared by skipper Fred Hunger and his team.

“The NYYC is a venerable yachting institution in the U.S.,” says Hunger. “They run a first class event and the fact that this event is a qualifier to a larger event for sailing in Newport is what we are looking forward to”

The team is made up of interested J/22 sailors with the final call of the team members being made by the Club’s commodore, with the whole club supporting the team.

“Everyone is really excited about the event and the fact that our club was invited to attend,” added Hunger.

As with previous editions, the 2016 Resolute Cup will utilize two one-design fleets. Teams will sail a two-day qualifying series in both Sonars and Melges 20s, with the top ten teams moving to the two-day championship series in Melges 20s and the remaining teams competing in Sonars. While experience in either boat can be an advantage, the Resolute Cup is anchored to the belief that the best sailors can make any boat go fast; or at least faster than the competition.

“The keys will be just sailing consistently, in both of the qualifying series boats," says Hunger. "We are trying to practice as much as we can in the Melges 20 and we have one on charter in our club. We have not sailed a lot in the Sonars but we hope it is close to the J/22 and so we are hoping be competitive. Sailing consistently and well is what we aim for.”
