Indian Harbor Yacht Club has been committed to advancing the sport at all levels since its founding in 1889. Early members participated in the establishment of the North American Yacht Racing Union (known today as US Sailing), and club members have won notable blue water races, including the Transatlantic Race, the King's Cup, the Newport to Bermuda Race, and the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit. In addition to a highly regarded junior sailing program, the club is active in one-design sailing and takes great pride in hosting championship regattas including the 2003 Etchells World Championship, the 2009 US Sailing Youth Championships, and the 2010 Mallory Trophy.

Skipper Jamie Cummiskey was an All-American Collegiate Sailor at Brown University and past winner of the US Team Racing Championship (Hinman Trophy). Over the past 20 years he has been racing offshore and one designs, with a more recent interest in Ideal 18 racing with his family. Tactican Steve Schmidt began racing at Milwaukee Yacht Club on Lake Michigan and quickly graduated onto the national and North American Championship scene in the Laser and Finn dinghy classes. He punctuated this participation with a 1980 US Olympic Finn campaign, including the 1979 Gold Cup (World Championships) in Weymouth, England. Karen Lau started sailing in Rye, N.Y. in Blue Jays as a teenager and later crewed on an Etchells during college. She rejoined sailing competitively on the Ideal 18s and as crew won the Long Island Sound YRA Championships in 2012 and 2013, placed fifth in the 2012 Ideal 18 North Americans, and second in the 2013 Ideal 18 Interclub Championships of LIS. Carolyn Blackmar is relatively new to sailing, she learned one-design racing crewing on Thistles for Tom Hubbell. Carolyn expanded her one-design experience to crewing on the Etchells and Vipers competing in events such as the Fall Series Annapolis, the Jaguar Cup, San Diego NOOD, Long Beach Race Week and other East Coast Regattas.
